Safe Mail Handling and General Safety Precautions
Here are some basic steps to follow when handling mail at work or home: - Never accept mail or package deliveries from unknown persons who can not provide proper identification and proof of employment by delivery organization.
- Be alert for and report any mail and packages left unattended following the procedures under "What To Do" below.
Here are some "Red Flags" to identify suspicious letters or packages: - Packages with excessive postage, using postage stamps as opposed to meter indicia.
- Address is poorly typed or handwritten, and has misspellings.
- Packages containing oily stains, crystallization on wrapper or strange odors.
- No return address or return address not consistent with postmark.
- Exceptionally large or lopsided packages.
- Packages that are rigid, bulky or discolored.
- Packages that make sloshing sounds or appear to contain liquid.
- Packages which display evidence or electrical wire or tin foil.
- Excessive wrapping materials, such as masking tape, strapping tape, or string.
What To Do… … if you notice any suspicious or unusual substance on letters or packages, … if you suspect that you touched a surface with or are exposed to an unknown substance or powder, … if you notice an unattended letter or package: - Do not smell, touch or move the letter or package.
- Immediately wash your hands with soap and water.
- Notify your manager and advise coworkers to stay away from your work area
- Notify a security officer in your building. You should contact 911 or your local Postal Inspection Service if the letter or package came through the United States Postal Service.
- Turn off any circulating fans, air conditioners or heaters (if applicable).
- Ensure that all persons who have touched the letter wash their hands with soap and water.
- List all persons who have touched the substance, letter or package.
General Safety Guidelines If you see or hear something that makes you feel uncomfortable or concerned: - Contact any security officer in your building immediately.
Follow the safety measures in place where you work. - If your facility requires a badge, be sure to have it with you at all times.
- If you forget your badge when entering, please be patient with the security officers.
- Be conscious of others entering the building with you. If they do not have a badge, notify a security officer or manager.
